The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath.
Death has never been busier, and will become busier still.
By her brother's graveside, Liesel's life is changed when she picks up an object, partially hidden in the snow. It is The Gravedigger's Handbook, and it is her first act of book thievery.
So begins a love affair with books and words, as Liesel learns to read. Soon she is stealing books from Nazi book-burnings, the mayor's wife's library, wherever there are books to be found.
But these are dangerous times. When Liesel's foster family hides a Jewish fist-fighter in their basement, Liesel's world is both opened up, and closed down.As winter closes in and blizzards cut them off, the hotel seems to develop a life of its own. It is meant to be empty. So who is the lady in Room 217 and who are the masked guests going up and down in the elevator? And why do the hedges shaped like animals seem so alive?
Somewhere, somehow, there is an evil force in the hotel - and that, too, is beginning to shine...

Ampersand Book Club: Christmas Edition
In December, the Ampersand Book Club will be meeting a bit earlier in the month than usual, to accomodate for our members who are going away for Christmas. We will be reading a short and fun Christmas book! Yay! Here are the details:
The book
Hogfather by Terry Pratchett
The synopsis
Superstition makes things work in the Discworld and undermining it can have Consequences. It's just not right to find Death creeping down chimneys and trying to say Ho Ho Ho . . .
It's the last night of the year, the time is turning, and if Susan, Gothic governess and Death's granddaughter (sort of), doesn't sort everything out by morning, there won't be a morning. Ever again . . .
Meeting date for this session
Saturday the 14th of December, 1.30pm - 3.30pm
Meeting location
Downstairs at Ampersand Cafe and Bookstore, 78 Oxford St, Paddington NSW 2021
